In Bulgaria, it is a tradition to give martenitsas—red and white dolls, tassels, or friendship bracelets—to friends and loved. They are given as gifts on March 1st, when we welcome Baba Marta—a symbolic figure who brings the changeable March weather, but also hope for sunshine and a new beginning. Martenitsas are one of the most beloved Bulgarian customs, symbolizing the arrival of spring and carrying wishes for health, good luck, and a long life.
Martenitsas are usually made of white and red thread. Red is seen as a symbol of life, strength, health, and protection, while white represents purity, light, hope, and longevity. They are worn on the wrist, pinned to clothing, or worn as a necklace, and sometimes they are also placed on animals or on the home for prosperity.
Martenitsas are worn on the wrist, pinned to clothing, or worn as a necklace, and sometimes they are also placed on animals or on the home for prosperity. According to tradition, a martenitsa is worn until a person sees a stork, a swallow, or a blossoming tree—a sign that spring has truly arrived.
In Bulgarian folklore, Baba Marta is an elderly woman whose mood changes very quickly, much like the weather in March. When she is happy, the days are sunny and warm, but if she gets angry, the cold can linger and it may even snow.
Martenitsas are a symbol of love and care, which Bulgarians exchange with the greeting: “Happy Baba Marta!” and with wishes for health and happiness throughout the year.
